 What is a shooting star?

Actually a shooting star is not a star at all. This streaks of light sometimes are seen in the night sky, which are caused by  tiny bits of dust and rocks called meteoroids, falling into the earth’s atmosphere  and burning up due to the friction of air.

The short lived trail of light that the burning meteoroid produces is called a meteor. The speed of a shooting star depends on how and when the meteor enters the Earth's atmosphere. On average, the speed of meteor ranges from 11/km/sec to 72 km/sec. Tons of meteoritic material enter the Earth's atmosphere every day, and there are about a million “shooting stars” every day all over the planet.
